The Łódź-Kaliska Train Station
Description
An account of the resource
The Łódź-Kaliska Train Station was built in the beginning of the 20th century, about 3 kilometers from the center of the city. The art nouveau building, designed by Czesław Domaniewski and Jan Heurich became one of the most beautiful emblems of Łódź. The staircase in the front of the building gave it a monumental character. A distinctive ramp lead into the station. Art nouveau details could be found in the building and railway platforms. This train station is featured in the interwar-period film "I Lied"("Skłamałam”) (1937).

The Bolesław Chrobry Public Primary School at No. 88 Drewnowska Street
Description
An account of the resource
The school on Drewnowska Street was designed by the architect Wiesław Lisowski in the shape of a letter "H." The architectural form as a whole evokes the Neoclassical Style while its portico, supported by columns, alludes to the tradition of Polish Manorial architecture (a style in Polish architecture of the late IX and early XX cc.). This school building was constructed in Bałuty between 1923 and 1925.

„Mezaljans” w 10 akt. z Normą Talmagde i Eugene O’Brien w rolach głównych. Z powyższego wynika, że dzięki energicznemu i sprężystemu kierownictwu dyr. Hercberga, „Syrena” stanie się pierwszorzędną w dzielnicy bałuckiej, placówką filmową. Zamierzeniom [sic?] p. Hercberga należy przyklasnąć i życzyć powodzenia w dalszej owocnej pracy. P.

Directed by the eminent Edward Sedgwick. The whole torment and tragedy of the oppressed red-skinned people by their white enemies is captured in this drama with full reverence. In the times when the first white man appeared on American soil, dreams of power drove him to the land of the setting sun. From that time also dates the bloody and murderous conflicts between the red man and the white. The red man defended the land of his fathers, the white, greedy for wealth and hungry for power, forced out the Indian from his homeland. This is the sense of the drama, around which spins action of remarkable expression, [and] scenes [that] outright congeal blood in the veins. Also in “Syrena,” yet another picture is being screened under the title of “Misalliance” [Graustark], in 10 acts, with Norma Talmadge and Eugene O’Brien in the leading roles. The director, well-known in the world of film, is Dimitri Buchowetzki. It is a powerful drama of love, love that never dies out, even in times of the greatest doubt, such a love that crushes all barriers before it, only in order to reach its desired goal. Good musical stage production. P. [Center image: Soon appearing on the screen of / “Syrena,” our compatriot / Pola Negri / starring in Paramount Pictures] First-rate cinema in the Bałuty district. / (Interview with Mr. Hercberg, director of the “Syrena” cinema). / The center of our chimney-town possesses several first-rate film tabernacles, where the public may with pleasure spend a few carefree moments for their own entertainment. Conditions in these cinemas fulfill all possible technical and hygienic requirements. This matter presents itself entirely differently in the peripheries of our city, such as in the Bałuty and Górna districts. In Bałuty, for example, we have three cinemas, of which only one, “Syrena,” is up to the correct standard. On account of the fact that film, as the cheapest cultural entertainment, is the most accessible to the broad masses, and on this account plays a truly central role in Bałuty as an educational institution—we turned to Mr. Hercberg, director of the “Syrena” cinema, with a request to provide us with factual information concerning cinema life in this district. This is what director Mr. Hercberg told us: “My concern is, above all, to give the Bałuty district genuine, first-rate, in no way differing from that located in the center of the city—cinema. With this goal, in the near future, I will carry out a thorough renovation of my cinema, “Syrena,” adapting it to the latest technical and hygienic standards, while mastering special apparatuses for projection and being a specialist myself—a mechanic, I say that I will fulfill this intended goal completely. Also, with the lowest prices, and wanting to give the possibility to the broad masses of Bałuty to see first-rate films, I have contracted a series of pictures, for example: “Ben-Hur,” “The Big Parade,” “The Deluge,” “The Silver Treasure,” “Flower of Night,” “Eaglet,” “The Betrayal that Wasn’t,” “The Cowboy in a Tailcoat,” “Clown and Equestrian Vaulting,” “The Mark of Zorro,” “Black Eagle,” “The Man in the Mask,” “Lightning Train,” “Red Heart,” “Siberia,” “The Devil’s Circus,” and many others. These films will be shown in “Syrena” during the holidays. The broadest realms of Bałuty are extremely interested in film. Our “Syrena” is filled to the brim at every showing, and it often happens that the public waits in line in front of the ticket office for several hours.” With this, our interview with Mr. Hercberg concluded. It follows that, thanks to the energetic and dynamic leadership of Director Hercberg, “Syrena” will become the primary movie facility in the Bałuty district. Mr. Hercberg’s intentions deserve to be applauded and wished luck in further fruitful work. P.

Theater “Luna” in Łódź / Opened in December 1911 in the center of the city (Przejazd Street 1), the Cinematograph-Theater “Luna” has won the liking of the Łódź public unusually quickly and took the lead among such ventures. The always tastefully-assembled program continuously comprises the newest creations of cinematography. Luna Theater’s round of outstanding international hits started off with “The Defense of Sevastopol” [originally “Oborona Sevastopolya”]; “Quo Vadis,” “The Child of Paris” [“L’enfant de Paris”], “The Last Days of Pompeii” [“Gli ultimi giorni di Pompeii], “Atlantis,” and others followed. The projection itself has reached in this theater a level of perfection that can hardly be surpassed; the entire flicker-free and silent showing attests that the apparatus-booth always is updated with the newest technical invention. The safety of this theater has reached such a degree that every fire hazard should be regarded as eliminated. The unique ventilation system of the projection room makes visiting the theater in winter as well as in summer (especially in summer, thanks to the garden terrace) equally pleasant. The orchestra of the Luna Theater is known as the best in the city and satisfies even the most indulgent requirements. The Luna Theater additionally enjoys the merit of having introduced in Łódź the permanent children’s showing, and the strong daily attendance of the same proves again and again that with this, a real need has been met. / The Luna Theater therefore earns its reputation as an ornament and landmark of the city of Łódź.

Panorama of Łódź
Description
An account of the resource
A panorama of Łódź at the end of the 18th century in a stylized picture from the 1960s or 70s. In this artistic rendition, Łódź is shown during the pre-industrial phase of its history, when it was still a small agrarian settlement. We can see the principal roads—including the most important Piotrkowska route, which connected the cities of Łęczyca and Piotrków Trybunalski—and the two plazas, Plac Kościelny around the wooden church and market (later known as the Old Market Square). In front of the picture we see the river Ostroga (incorrectly referred to as Łódka), with a pond and mill. A fragment of a stylized Latin inscription with a legend of the map appears in the upper right corner.

Helenow Park Concert Shell
Description
An account of the resource
A wind band on the stage of the concert shell at the Helenów Park is posing for photograph. The musicians’ instruments are raised but nobody is playing, and the conductor is directly facing the photographer. Rows of chairs set up for the spectators are standing in front of the stage, but only a few elegantly dressed guests are present, mostly sitting in the first row. Several of them are half turned, looking at the photographer. The image was published in an 1913 photographic album featuring the Helenów Park.
