The Jewish Vocational School "Talmud Tora" on Średnia Street
Description
An account of the resource
This building, constructed in the 1890s by the Jewish Charitable Society, belonged to the Jewish Vocational School "Talmud Tora," where impoverished Jewish youth were able to receive an education. The Jewish industrialist Zygmunt Jarociński was one of the institution's biggest supporters and donated land for its creation. In the interwar years, the building belonged to the Jewish Society for the Advancement of Education, which used the space to establish both a primary school and a Men's Technical Gymnasium.

Obligatory disinfection of a residence at No. 14 Pańska Street
Description
An account of the resource
During World War I, the material and medical conditions in which Łódź residents lived were dire. The lack of detergents, especially of regular soap, made proper upkeep of personal hygiene nearly impossible. Communicable diseases such as cholera, diphtheria, dysentery, typhoid fever, and tuberculosis became widespread. Municipal medical services led the fight against infectious disease by establishing new hospitals, quarantine facilities, disinfection and delousing chambers, bathhouses and compulsory vaccination drives. Residences linked to epidemic contamination had to undergo disinfection protocol. This photo pictures residents at No. 14 Pańska Street waiting in the courtyard while the building is being disinfected.

Inspection at a delousing facility
Description
An account of the resource
World War I was a difficult time for Łódź inhabitants. Food and supplies aid for the poorest residents was overseen and coordinated by local government—initially by the Main Citizens' Council and later by the City Hall and City Council. These local institutions were also in charge of health and sanitation services. Municipal medical services led the fight against infectious disease by establishing new hospitals, quarantine facilities, disinfection and delousing chambers, bathhouses and compulsory vaccination drives. In this photo health and sanitation workers carry out an initial hygiene inspection of those being treated in a delousing facility.
