An ad and an article in the Łódź weekly dedicated to cinema affairs about the movie theater Syrena. Although disguised as an interview, the article is in fact a full page advertisement for Syrena, announcing planned renovations. The owner assures his clientele that shortly there will be a first-rate movie theater in Bałuty.

Obraz ten, posiadający bardzo wysokie walory artystyczne, wyprodukowany został przez wytwórnię amerykańską „Uniwersal Pictures Corporation” w New-Yorku przy udziale najwybitniejszych artystów filmowych, jak Stoot Gibson, Anna Cornwall, Harold Groodwin, Kathleen Key i in. Reżyserował wybitny Edward Sedgwick. Cała męka i tragedja [sic] gnębionych czerwonoskórych przez swych wrogów białych, oddana została w tym dramacie z całym pietyzmem. Od czasu, gdy pierwszy biały człowiek zjawił się na ziemi amerykańskiej, sny o potędze pchały go do krainy zachodzącego słońca. Odtąd też datują się krwawe i mordercze zapasy między człowiekiem czerwonym, a białym. Czerwony bronił ziemi swych ojców, biały chciwy bogactw i żądny panowania, wypierał indjanina [sic] z jego ojczyzny. Oto sens dramatu, dokoła którego snuje się akcja o nadzwyczajnej ekspresji, sceny ścinające wprost krew w żyłach. Pozatem [sic] w „Syrenie” wyświetlany jest jeszcze drugi obraz p. t. „Mezaljans” w 10 akt. z Normą Talmagde i Eugene O’Brien w rolach głównych. Reżyserja [sic] znanego szeroko w świecie filmowym Dymitra Buchowieckiego. Jest to potężny dramat miłości, miłości, która nie wygasa nigdy, nawet w chwilach największego zwątpienia, miłości takiej, która kruszy przed sobą wszystkie zapory, byle tylko dojść do upragnionego celu. Dobra inscenizacja muzyczna. P. Hercbergiem, dyrektorem kina „Syrena”). / Centrum naszego kominogrodu posiada kilka pierwszorzędnych przybytków Filmji [sic], gdzie publiczność może z przyjemnością spędzić kilka beztroskich chwil ku własnej rozrywce. Warunki w tych kinach odpowiadają wszelkim wymogom technicznym i hygjenicznym [sic]. Sprawa ta przedstawia się całkiem inaczej na peryferjach [sic] naszego miasta, jak na Bałutach i w Górnej dzielnicy. Na Bałutach np. mamy trzy kina, z których tylko jedynie „Syrena” postawiona jest na właściwym poziomie. Ze względu na to, że film, jako najtańsza rozrywka kulturalna, jest najbardziej dostępnym dla szerokich rzesz i w tym wypadku na Bałutach naprawdę odgrywa pierwszorzędną rolę, jako placówka kształcąca—zwróciliśmy się do p. Hercberga, dyrektora kina „Syrena” z prośbą, o udzielenie nam rzeczowych informacyj [sic], tyczących się życia filmowego w tejże dzielnicy. Oto co nam powiedział p. dyr. Hercberg: „Troską moją jest przedewszystkiem [sic] dać dzielnicy bałuckiej prawdziwe, pierwszorzędne, niczem [sic] się nie różniące od położonych w centrum miasta—kino. W tym celu w najbliższym czasie przeprowadzam gruntowny remont swego kina „Syrena”, przystosowując je do najnowszych wymogów technicznych i higjenicznych [sic], przytem [sic] posiadam specjalne aparaty do wyświetlania i sam będąc specjalistą—mechanikiem, twierdzę, że z zamierzonego celu wywiążę się w zupełności. Pozatem [sic] przy najniższej opłacie, chcąc dać możność szerokim rzeszom Bałut ujrzenia pierwszorzędnych filmów, zakontraktowałem szereg obrazów, jak np.: „Ben-Hur”, „Wielka Parada”, „Potop”, „Nostromo”, „Kwiat Nocy”, Orlę”, „Zdrada, której nie było”, „Cowboy we fraku”, „Błazen i woltyżerka”, „Znak Zorry [sic?]”, „Złodziej z Bagdadu”, „Czarny Orzeł”, „Człowiek w masce”, „Pociąg błyskawiczny”, „Czerwone serce”, „Sybir”, „Djabelski [sic] Cyrk” i wiele innych. Filmy te będą wyświetlane w „Syrenie” w okresie poświątecznym. Szerokie sfery bałuckie filmem interesują się nadzwyczajnie. Nasza „Syrena” jest na każdym seansie wypełnione po brzegi i często się zdarza, że publiczność oczekuje przed kasą na swoją kolejkę po parę godzin”. Na tem [sic] skończyliśmy rozmowę z p. Hercbergiem. Z powyższego wynika, że dzięki energicznemu i sprężystemu kierownictwu dyr. Hercberga, „Syrena” stanie się pierwszorzędną w dzielnicy bałuckiej, placówką filmową. Zamierzeniom [sic?] p. Hercberga należy przyklasnąć i życzyć powodzenia w dalszej owocnej pracy. P.

Lion Hunt / hilarious comedy in 4 acts / Advertisement! / “The Deluge,” “Eaglet” (Sleepwalker) Cinema-Theater “Syrena”. / “Tragedy of a Dying Race”, / drama in 16 acts. / The management of the “Syrena” is showing this week, on its screen, the monumental drama, set against the background of the uprising of the red-skinned people against the whites, “Tragedy of a Dying Race.” This picture, possessing a very high artistic value, was produced by the American company “Universal Pictures Corporation” in New York with the participation of the most outstanding film artists, like Stoot [Hoot] Gibson, Anna [Anne] Cornwall, Harold Groodwin [Goodwin], Kathleen Key, and others. Directed by the eminent Edward Sedgwick. The whole torment and tragedy of the oppressed red-skinned people by their white enemies is captured in this drama with full reverence. In the times when the first white man appeared on American soil, dreams of power drove him to the land of the setting sun. From that time also dates the bloody and murderous conflicts between the red man and the white. The red man defended the land of his fathers, the white, greedy for wealth and hungry for power, forced out the Indian from his homeland. This is the sense of the drama, around which spins action of remarkable expression, [and] scenes [that] outright congeal blood in the veins. Also in “Syrena,” yet another picture is being screened under the title of “Misalliance” [Graustark], in 10 acts, with Norma Talmadge and Eugene O’Brien in the leading roles. The director, well-known in the world of film, is Dimitri Buchowetzki. It is a powerful drama of love, love that never dies out, even in times of the greatest doubt, such a love that crushes all barriers before it, only in order to reach its desired goal. [Center image: Soon appearing on the screen of / “Syrena,” our compatriot / Pola Negri / starring in Paramount Pictures] First-rate cinema in the Bałuty district. / (Interview with Mr. Hercberg, director of the “Syrena” cinema). / The center of our chimney-town possesses several first-rate film tabernacles, where the public may with pleasure spend a few carefree moments for their own entertainment. Conditions in these cinemas fulfill all possible technical and hygienic requirements. This matter presents itself entirely differently in the peripheries of our city, such as in the Bałuty and Górna districts. In Bałuty, for example, we have three cinemas, of which only one, “Syrena,” is up to the correct standard. On account of the fact that film, as the cheapest cultural entertainment, is the most accessible to the broad masses, and on this account plays a truly central role in Bałuty as an educational institution—we turned to Mr. Hercberg, director of the “Syrena” cinema, with a request to provide us with factual information concerning cinema life in this district. This is what director Mr. Hercberg told us: “My concern is, above all, to give the Bałuty district genuine, first-rate, in no way differing from that located in the center of the city—cinema. With this goal, in the near future, I will carry out a thorough renovation of my cinema, “Syrena,” adapting it to the latest technical and hygienic standards, while mastering special apparatuses for projection and being a specialist myself—a mechanic, I say that I will fulfill this intended goal completely. Also, with the lowest prices, and wanting to give the possibility to the broad masses of Bałuty to see first-rate films, I have contracted a series of pictures, for example: “Ben-Hur,” “The Big Parade,” “The Deluge,” “The Silver Treasure,” “Flower of Night,” “Eaglet,” “The Betrayal that Wasn’t,” “The Cowboy in a Tailcoat,” “Clown and Equestrian Vaulting,” “The Mark of Zorro,” “Black Eagle,” “The Man in the Mask,” “Lightning Train,” “Red Heart,” “Siberia,” “The Devil’s Circus,” and many others. These films will be shown in “Syrena” during the holidays. The broadest realms of Bałuty are extremely interested in film. Our “Syrena” is filled to the brim at every showing, and it often happens that the public waits in line in front of the ticket office for several hours.” With this, our interview with Mr. Hercberg concluded. It follows that, thanks to the energetic and dynamic leadership of Director Hercberg, “Syrena” will become the primary movie facility in the Bałuty district. Mr. Hercberg’s intentions deserve to be applauded and wished luck in further fruitful work. P.
