Gated entryway leading into the Old Jewish Cemetery

Description

Passing through these gates, visitors could gain access to the first Jewish cemetery in Łódź. Situated on Wesoła Street (the ironically named Joyful Street), the cemetery occupied a space now circumferenced Limanowski, Bazarowa, Rybna and Zachodna Streets. Among others, Dawid Wolf Abbe was buried there. According to existing records, the last burial at the Old Cemetery took place in 1922. Partially devastated during World War II,the cemetery was obliterated in 1949.
