Impoverished Jews 4
Title
Impoverished Jews 4
Description
From 1916 to 1918, nearly all industrial activity in Łódź came to a standstill—there was no work to be found, food staples were in short supply, and food prices had risen to several times their former value. Many Lodzer families became destitute and suffered from malnourishment. Hungry people left the city to search for sustenance in neighboring districts. The Jewish population, settled primarily in cities and villages, had an especially hard time. In 1918 people finally began to return to Łódź; this photograph shows residents returning to the city in an open horse-drawn carriage.
