Description

During World War I, Jews fought for the Poland's independence in the Polish Legions and later took part in the Polish-Soviet War. In the interwar period, Jews, like other Polish citizens, were drafted for military service. Jewish soldiers took part in the September campaign of 1939; many were captured or perished. Jews also fought in Polish military formations during later battles World War II; for example, 850 Polish Jews took part in the Battle of Monte Cassino (1944).
