Title

Swimming pool at the Moniuszka Street YMCA facility

Description

The building of the Polish YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) was constructed in 1935, and the swimming pool pictured here—the only covered pool in Łódź at the time—was opened for use in 1936. Sadly, however, Jews (dominant in swimming in those years) were not allowed to swim there. The exception was Roman Kantor, an Olympian fencer at the 1936 Berlin Games; permission for him to use the facility was granted following his nomination to the Polish Olympic team while it was training for the 1940 Games in Helsinki. In May 1939, Kantor was sworn in as a member of the Polish Olympic team at a ceremony held in the YMCA building.
